British Values

The promotion of British Values at Rushey Mead Primary School

At Rushey Mead Primary School, values of tolerance and respect permeate all areas of school life. Our vision statement underpins the work of our school and ensures an environment in which pupils feel safe and secure and are able to reach their full potential. Pupil voice plays an integral part in driving the school forward and our school promises, THINK! and STOP! are seen as the foundation upon which this can be achieved.

At Rushey Mead Primary School, we understand core British Values as:

  1. Democracy
  2. Rule of Law
  3. Individual Liberty
  4. Mutual respect and tolerance towards those of different faiths and cultures

These values flow through our school ethos and our daily lives at school. Pupils are reminded of them both explicitly during assemblies and through the curriculum.

During assemblies, teachers and members of the senior leadership team remind children about managing their behaviour and the importance of having rules to follow in our daily lives. They are reminded of the importance their contributions can make to our society. Pupils are taught to believe in themselves and pursue excellence through hard work and perseverance.  Parents and the local community are invited to various assemblies and celebrations commemorating the festivals of different faith groups.

At Rushey Mead, our pupils benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum which contains units of work which are underpinned by British values and British culture: pupils study stories from a range of cultures and look at the lives of inspirational British people. All pupils have the opportunity to take part in an election process in order to elect school councillors.
