Mathematics

"We are not teaching kids to solve problems,
we are teaching them to be problem solvers." Dr Yeap Ban Har

The children at Rushey Mead Primary School are always eager to share their maths learning and their enjoyment for the subject is clear.  It is our intention that children leave us seeing maths as a fascinating, practical and powerful subject.  We want all children to gain a good understanding of all aspects of the maths curriculum which they can apply to a wide variety of everyday situations.

Maths No Problem!

Here at Rushey Mead, we use the the Maths – No problem! Scheme to support teaching and learning from EYFS to Year 6 which is supplemented by a range of resources. New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach. This enables all children to experience hands-on learning using a variety of objects and manipulatives to support their mathematical thinking. The use of clear models and images aids understanding when moving to using digits and signs.

What does a maths lesson look like at Rushey Mead Primary School?

Lessons usually start with a fluency activity to consolidate number facts or recap previous learning.

A typical Maths – No Problem! lesson in Years 1 to 6 follows this structure:

  • Explore is an anchor task based on a real-life problem which gives pupils the opportunity to interact with and learn from one another. Calculations/jottings are recorded in a Maths Journal
  • Guided Practice lets the pupils solve problems using a number of different methods they may not have previously known which are recorded in a Maths Journal
  • Independent Practice is where the children complete the workbook individually.

Challenge activities supplement the lesson through reasoning and problem-solving questions.

Revise and Review consolidation lessons are used to revisit previous learning and ensure Maths skills are embedded.

All our children regularly access Numbots or TTRS and are motivated to improve their speed and accuracy. Parents support their children at home and some children even attend a club at lunchtime.  Achievements are celebrated during assemblies where certificates are presented.
